Durability, customized fit, easy cleaning, and similarity to natural teeth make dentures a preferred solution for individuals who’ve suffered from partial or complete tooth loss.

It’s important to remember that even though dentures are removable prosthetic devices, they do require care and maintenance. Failure on the part of the wearer to follow through on that care and maintenance can have painful and potentially serious results. One such side effect is a fungal infection known as denture stomatitis.

What Is Denture Stomatitis?

Denture stomatitis, also known as denture-related candidiasis or denture sore mouth, is a fungal infection that affects people who wear dentures, characterized by a variety of symptoms:

  • Inflammation and redness of the oral mucosa underneath the denture
  • Soreness and discomfort
  • White patches or plaque on the oral mucosa
  • Difficulty eating and speaking
  • Bad breath

Though uncomfortable, the symptoms of denture stomatitis are fairly mild, though in more severe cases could be indicative of an infection that can be quite painful and could spread in the body.

What Are the Causes of Denture Stomatitis?

The main cause of denture stomatitis is an overgrowth of candida albicans, a fungus that’s naturally present in the oral cavity. This overgrowth typically results from some combination of the following:

  • Continuously wearing dentures for prolonged periods or overnight
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • A weakened immune system

How Is Denture Stomatitis Treated?

Treating denture stomatitis involves both management of infection and the prevention of recurrence. Common treatment options include:

  • Antifungal medications – topical or oral antifungal agents, either over-the-counter or prescription, can kill the fungus.
  • Proper denture care – maintaining a proper oral hygiene routine is essential in preventing denture stomatitis.
  • Regular dental checkups – visit a dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings and to ensure proper fit of dentures, the health of the gums, and for early signs of infection.
